Name: Julie Layland
Tell us about yourself. Where are you from and how did you get here? I am from the Fort Lauderdale Florida area. I moved to Georgia just over a year ago for work.
How long have you been a member at The Garage? I joined the garage in Sept 2015
How did you find The Garage? I was referred by Danielle Paradis and a friend who has completed in Garage Games
What do you like about working out at The Garage? I love the community, especially Barbell/Oly Lifting Club. I have an even greater love for lifting because of my awesome buddies and coach Ayse! I love how the new people are embraced and encouraged by coaches and members.
What do you do for a living? I am an Agent Development Tech (so fancy lol) for AAA. Basically, I train insurance agents.
What are your hobbies and interests? Would it be obvious to say Crossfit and Oly Lifting are my hobbies? LOL! I do also love to bake and cook. I am looking forward to starting a garden when I buy my house in a few weeks.
What is something interesting about you most people don’t know? I saved a life once ☺
Favorite food(s)? BBQ baby back ribs. The Florida kind, smothered in Sweet BBQ sauce! None of that dry rub or vinegar stuff.
Favorite music/bands/artist? Rock is my first love. I also love Country, hip hop and Latin music.
Favorite WOD, lift or skill? My favorite WOD is called Freakin Core. It’s named after my old box. It’s a nasty combo of sit ups and such, done at a fast as heck pace. Its horrible, and I love it. Favorite lift is Clean & Jerk.
WOD, Lift or skill you never ever want to do again? Karen. UGH
What’s your proudest CrossFit achievement to date? Finishing a Spartan Race
What’s on your bucket list? Or What are some goals you are trying to accomplish? (either at the gym or otherwise) I want to get over the fear of getting into a handstand, just because it’s irrational. LOL! I also want to do more competing and maybe another mud run or two.
Anything else you want to include? Anyone can do this. I started crossfit having little experience ever working out. I couldn’t run, or jump or lift more that 35 lbs. I was depressed and tired. Crossfit made me feel alive and the community made me feel loved. I feel better now at 40 than I did at 25. Let’s not even talk about the confidence that comes from doing things you didn’t think were possible!
If you could meet one person, dead or alive, who would it be and why? No one. I have so many fascinating, interesting and motivating people in my life. I am full.
If you were trapped on a deserted island, what three things would you want with you? Food, water and my favorite pillow!
